Changing Apartments by Zoe Swish

Long-term fans of Fictionmania may recognize Zoe Swish better by the name Swishy, author of such multi-part stories as Kate Draffen and Unchained. With Changing Apartments, she makes the leap to professional publishing, assisted by the editing talents of one of our favorite authors, Courtney Captisa.

What strikes me most about Changing Apartments is the originality of it. Swish is clearly aware of the basic tropes of the bodyswapping genre, and knows how these kinds of stories are expected to develop, but she is not afraid to break the rules and make the story her own. This is a story that develops in a new way, which puts a different sort of emphasis on sexual discovery, and takes an entirely different approach to happily ever after.

Grace and Hank are neighbors, acquaintances who pass in the hall, but who really know nothing about one another. When they both arrive home from a night out, a strange sort of supernatural synchronicity occurs as they insert their keys and open their respective doors at the same time. Except, Hank finds himself walking into Grace's apartment, and vice versa. There is some initial comedy in the situation, as both try to exit back into the hall and correct the mistake, but they keep finding themselves in the wrong apartment. What is even stranger is that they seem to be dressed in one another's clothes, despite looking and feeling very much like themselves . . . at first.

Swish spends a lot of time on their respective transformations, inviting us to share in the magic of being reshaped a piece at a time. The level of detail here is exquisite, and it comes without the pain or discomfort on which the genre so often relies. Once their transformations are complete, Hank suddenly finds himself very interested in exploring his newly feminine body, while Grace wastes no time indulging her masculinity, seizing Hank's wife and enjoying a night of passion. It is fun, it is genuine, and it is almost innocent in the way it develops.

Beyond the sexual aspect, both Hank and Grace find themselves adapting to their new lives rather more easily than they expected. While they lack the memories and life experiences of the other, it seems that a lot of what makes us masculine/feminine is instinctual, surprising both of them with talents they did not expect to possess. It is all slow and subtle, shown rather than told, allowing the story to develop on the strength of the characters, not the bodyswapping.

I thoroughly enjoyed Changing Apartments, and was honestly delighted by how Swish chose to resolve the story and arrive at a happily ever after. If you are a fan of the genre, then this is a must-read tale that is smart, sexy, erotic, and entertaining all at the same time.

Her Kind of Man by Nona Raines
Publication Date: November 10, 2015
Genres:Erotica, LGBT, Romance

Earlier this year I had the distinct pleasure of taking part in the review tour for His Kind of Woman by Nona Raines. It was a lovely read, a truly romantic tale that demonstrated a wonderful understanding of what it means to be different. While it took on such difficult topics as family rejection, bullying, and coming out, it still managed to be positive and uplifting.

With Her Kind of Man, we get the long-awaited next chapter in the romance between Roy and Venetia. Although it is clear they are both very much in love, things are not perfect between them, largely because their romance is still under wraps. Roy is the kind of man who does the wrong thing for the right reasons, and it drives a pretty deep wedge into the tale. In an effort to protect Vee and the kids of her SPECTRUM youth group, he has kept their entire relationship a secret from the guys at work. In his defense, some of the truckers he works with are homophobic and violent, but when the truth comes out, he does a very poor job of explaining himself.

Raines continues to explore the themes and threads of the first book here, forcing Roy and Vee to decide what they want from each other, and from a relationship. Both have fears to confront, and a lot of them begin with the elephant in the room - the death of Roy's brother, about whom neither is willing to talk.

Needless to say, there is still some pain to this second story, and more than a few uncomfortable moments to be dealt with. Harsh words are spoken, and relationships strained. Fortunately, this is a romance, not a tragedy, and you get the sense that Roy and Vee come out of the story stronger, more in love, and more committed for having faced their fears.

Interview and Excerpt with Vicktor Alexander (The Servant Duchess of Whitcomb)

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Vicktor Alexander, author of The Servant Duchess of Whitcomb.

♥ Hi, Vicktor! Thanks so much for agreeing to stop by for an interview. Do you have pictures that you use for your characters? Can you share them with us?

I absolutely do! Here are the pictures that I used for Orley and Chester when I submitted my cover art request form for The Servant Duchess of Whitcomb.

♥ Mmm, Orley is cute, but Chester is absolutely stunning! I am sure you are all talked out about the series at this point, so let me ask, what kind of book would you like to write that people would see as a huge departure for you?

A horror novel. A gruesome, hair raising, piss-your-pants, horror novel.

♥ I would that (grin). On that theme, have you ever killed a character? If so, was it traumatic for you? If not, would you ever consider it?

I haven’t killed a main character, not yet. I have killed a character though, and there are plans to kill a main character though, at least one in three different novels. So yes, I’ve considered it. And I consider killing Tommy from my Tate Pack series ALL the time. LOL. I wouldn’t do it though. Not unless I was about to retire from writing. Then I would put it at the end of a book. I have it all planned out:

“And as Tommy waved goodbye to the rest of the pack, he took a step and fell off the cliff, falling to his death. The End.”

LOL.

I would of course have to move and change my name, but it would SOOO be worth it. ROFLMAO.

♥ Okay, back to happier thoughts! Is there a favorite location you’ve ever written about?

It’s not been published yet, but I got to write about Dahshur, Egypt for a holiday novel called “Chris-n-zaa” part of a new series called Smith & Kwame. Because Smith and Kwame are in Dahshur they explore the pyramids and I got to do research about them, and I also got to do research about Egypt, which means I got to indulge my inner history nerd.

Though Dahshur is tied with Barbados. But that’s just because I’m half Bajan.

♥ Very cool - my inner history nerd is drooling a bit over that. Since you brought up the holidays, what’s your favorite season and favorite activity for that season?

I love winter. I always have. Though my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving and my favorite activity is watching cheesy Christmas movies the entire month of December, drinking hot chocolate, and eating cherry pie.

Thanks again to Vicktor Alexander for taking the time to stop by!

Excerpt:

THE SHARP retort of gunfire exploded around Orley Garrick, Duke of Whitcomb, and he ducked, trying to avoid the debris and the bodies of fallen soldiers around him as he surged forward. The smoke from the countless rifles burned his eyes as he desperately looked for the person who had caught his eye. He heard the cries of the dying calling out to him as he rode his horse farther into the thick of battle. Using his sword, he cut down an enemy soldier who raced toward him, mouth open as he let out a battle cry. Orley closed his eyes against the spray of blood across his face and blocked out the sound of the man’s death gurgle as he fell to the ground beneath his own horse.

Orley raced on toward the figure in white who didn’t belong on the battlefield. He called out a warning, telling the woman to be careful, because there was no way a man would be on a battlefield wearing a long, flowing white chemise, free of dust and bloodstain, appearing almost angelic among the crowd of soldiers. The woman didn’t stop. Instead she walked straight toward the commander of the enemy soldiers, and fear filled Orley. He wasn’t sure why; he didn’t know the woman, and yet he could not let anything happen to her.

At that moment, the woman turned to look at him, and Orley gasped when he realized the woman in front of him was not female as he’d suspected but male. Why in the world was a lady on the battlefield?

“You should not be here!” he yelled, trying to warn the male, but just as he got close enough to lift the woman onto the back of his horse, an enemy soldier plunged his sword through the woman’s back and out through his chest. Orley watched helplessly as the woman’s eyes widened moments before he collapsed to the ground, and a grief unlike aught he’d ever experienced ripped through him.

He was not sure how he knew, but the dying woman belonged to him, and someone had just taken him away.

Tossing his head back, Orley let out an anguished shout at the heavens.

ORLEY WOKE, panting and sweating, in the home of his friend, Heathcliff.

Holy. Shit. That one had been very different from his other nightmares. He rubbed his face with his hand and groaned as pain raced through his leg—the one that would never be the same. All because of war, a battle. All because of….

Orley shook his head. No, he wasn’t going to think about that.

Someone knocked lightly on the door, and Orley winced as he realized his plan to come to his room and take a quick nap after his taxing journey out of Tlondon had turned into a deep sleep and a brand-new nightmare.

God, he hated sleeping.

“Enter,” he called out as he sat up and swung his legs off the bed he was borrowing while visiting Heathcliff and Lucien for their country-house party. The door opened, and Orley turned to address the person standing there. He stopped short, almost swallowing his tongue as he took in the vision of the most beautiful creature to have ever been born.

Orley had been privileged to see many beautiful people in his life. Male and female, he was a lover of aesthetically pleasing images and didn’t discriminate. However, all of them paled in comparison to the lovely light-brown-skinned woman in front of him. Orley’s stomach clenched, his groin tightening as he inhaled sharply. The lovely scent of jasmine wafted up to his nostrils, and his eyes slid closed as he relished in the delightful fragrance emanating from the male who had just entered his room.

“Forgive me, Your Grace. I was sent to bring you a light repast and perhaps something to wash up with? His Grace the Duke of Pompinshire thought that perhaps you would like to freshen up before joining the rest of the guests downstairs.” The woman’s voice was soft and lyrical, with a slight lilt to it, and Orley wondered if perhaps he sang. He would have no problem lounging around on the settee listening to him sing or even just talk. Of course, as he took in the male’s appearance, he felt the desire to do much more than just listen to him.

“Your Grace? Are you ill?” the servant asked, and Orley swallowed, shaking his head.

“N-no. I’m fine. Just a bit out of sorts, I’m afraid. I appear to have overslept during my nap, and now I am feeling quite peckish,” he lied.

The woman nodded, his hazel eyes lighting with relief. Orley wondered at that. Was his well-being really of great concern, or was it just because the maid had been sent to look after Orley?

Orley allowed his gaze to rove over the young male’s form again, taking in every detail intently. He would like to have something to conjure up in his mind’s eye later on that evening when he put his hand to his already burgeoning erection.

Wearing the female black dress with a white apron, which was the maid’s uniform that was standard in most homes of the gentry, the young woman had honey blond hair that was currently pulled back in a very luscious chignon at the nape of his neck, and Orley could only imagine how long and thick it was. An image rose to his brain of that hair hanging down over his face as the young woman slid up and down his cock, and he pressed a hand to the sheets covering his waist. The young male’s skin was almond colored, and all Orley wanted to do was spend hours licking every inch of his body. He was not overly tall, only a few inches taller than Lucien, Heath’s husband, but still much shorter than Orley. And where Orley was all hard, thick muscles, the male maid before him was slender, though still with a lovely, toned body.

His slim-fingered hands held a covered silver tray, and Orley gestured him forward with a beckoning wave.

“Well, far be it from me to refuse such generosity from His Grace. You can just place it there on the nightstand,” he directed, watching the sway of the servant’s hips beneath the skirt of his maid’s gown as he walked toward the cherrywood nightstand. Orley shoved his fingers through his blond locks, messing up his hair and throwing his queue into disarray. He was unnerved as the vestiges of the nightmare faded from his mind, wreaking havoc with the lovely, distracting image of Heathcliff’s maid, whose form even now was causing a pleasurable ache in his balls.

“Is there anything else that I can do for you, Your Grace?” the maid asked, his voice hushed, eyes downcast, and a slight tinge of red to his light brown skin.

Orley prided himself on being a man of honor, integrity, and character. As a matter of fact, his grandfather, Charles Edrick Garrick I, the former Duke of Whitcomb, had more than once given him lessons and lectures on the way a gentleman was to behave. Anyone can strut around and use his physical strength to try and prove his brawn. But it takes honor, patience, gentleness, character, integrity, fortitude, knowing when to fight, knowing when to walk away, knowing when to love, how to love, and when to let go, and most importantly, knowing when to use your physical strength and when to be humble, that makes you a man.

Orley had always believed those words from his grandfather, had in fact lived by those words for his entire life. He’d only strayed from them when he’d served in His Majesty’s military and on those rare occasions when he’d allowed Blaine, Heathcliff, and Quincy to talk him into traveling down into the Lower East End to partake of the wares of the light-skirts. And while his grandfather’s words usually guided him, right now he was seriously considering doing something illicit.

He couldn’t believe the images that were passing through his mind. Flashes. Quick, as if they were memories like his time spent on the battlefield rather than the salacious, hopeful yearnings of a desirous, dry, fruitless attraction. However, the longer he spent in the company of the object of his mind’s current musings, the more it seemed his “dry, fruitless attraction” was soaked in hope and possibility. And perhaps it was for that reason that rationality and his grandfather’s words of character, honor, and integrity grew softer and softer until they were suddenly silent. All he could concentrate on was how lovely Heathcliff’s maid was. How round the male woman’s derriere was. How slim his shoulders were. How graceful his neck was.

How full his lips were, and how much Orley desperately wanted to kiss them.

“I think I would really like to know your name,” he heard himself saying.

The maid’s eyes widened, and he gasped softly. “Me, Your Grace?”

Orley chuckled. “Of course you. There is no one else in the room but you and I, and I assure you that I already know my own name. Unless it has changed in the time I have been asleep. It hasn’t, has it?”

The maid giggled and covered his mouth, shaking his head. Orley found himself even more enchanted. When was the last time he’d heard someone allow themselves to be so free that they just giggled? His life was constantly surrounded by danger, drama, gossip, backstabbers, and intrigue. He had a very small group of people he could trust, and they didn’t often have the time to smile, much less giggle. Being around someone who could giggle was a relief. It was like a bright ray of sunshine. Orley absolutely had to have the maid’s name.

“No, Your Grace. Your name hasn’t changed.” The maid glanced away for a moment, as if embarrassed, and then looked back. “My name is Chester.” He executed a flawless curtsy, and Orley rose from the bed and bowed low, smiling at Chester’s gasp. He knew Chester was surprised that a member of the gentry, and a duke no less, would bow to him, but he would soon learn that Orley was unlike every other duke out there.

“It is an honor to meet you, Chester. I am extremely happy to be in your presence and very happy that you will be serving me, and now….” Orley stepped close to Chester, looking down into the young woman’s hazel brown eyes. His heart was pounding, and his leg, for the first time in years, was not throbbing in pain—perhaps that was because only one thing on his body could be throbbing at a time, and his cock already had that covered. “I would very much like to kiss you.”

“Y-you would?” Chester stammered.

Orley nodded, lifting his hand to brush his fingers against the side of Chester’s cheek.

“Is that okay, Chester? I find you to be the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and I would really like to kiss you. May I?”

“You’re asking me?” Chester looked confused. “I was told that men of your standing didn’t ask, that you just take.”

Orley shook his head, saddened by what Chester thought of men of the ton, but he knew Chester’s assumptions came as a result of dealing with “men” of a certain ilk. He would be speaking with Heathcliff about those matters later that week, but at that moment, all of his energy and attention was focused on Chester.

“Of course I am asking you. You always have a choice. Not just with me, but with every single man in the world. You do not have to do anything you don’t want to do. At least, that is the way it should be in a perfect world. So if you don’t want to kiss me, we don’t have to.” Orley would be disappointed, he would be haunted for days, perhaps a fortnight, by the fullness of Chester’s mouth, but eventually he would get over it.

Chester nibbled on his bottom lip and then grinned. “I would love for you to kiss me, Your Grace.”

Orley wanted to let out a loud yell of triumph, but he held back and lowered his lips to Chester’s full, pillow-soft mouth. He was fully expecting the surge of lust that spread through his limbs. Maybe he was even expecting the tingle that spread through his fingers and toes. However, the lightheaded feeling that drowned him in peace and yet simultaneous excitement, and the way his heart sped up, were completely unexpected. He growled and pulled Chester to him, as close as he could possibly get the woman. He felt a bit like a ravenous beast, wanting to devour Chester whole.

He lifted his lips to take a breath, opened his eyes, and gazed down into Chester’s dazed ones. Chester smiled slowly up at him. Orley grinned back, rubbing his hand up and down Chester’s back and already preparing for the next round of kissing.

So he was surprised when he went to lower his head for another kiss and was met with nothing but air and the sound of his bedroom door closing.

Well, if it's Friday, then that must been it's time for Freebie Fiction Friday . . . time to put the 'TG' in TGIF (and the 'FD' in Friday)!

Every Friday I take the initiative to search through thew newly free titles on Amazon, and to identify those that might be of interest to trans* readers, fans, and lovers. Even if you don't have a Kindle, you can still download the titles through one of Amazon's free reading applications, and covert it (if need be) with Calibre. I can tell you I do most of my reading on my iPad, using Kindle for iPad, and it works beautifully.

Please do be sure to check the price before downloading anything, though, as most freebies are limited time offers, and some are specific to certain regions.

Fourplay Fetish Feature: Introducing Reed James

As we wrap up the year, and begin looking forward to the year ahead, I really want to start getting back to my original goal of celebrating authors as well as books. With that in mind, I am delighted to introduce our new Fourplay Fetish Feature, which will see us dedicate 4 consecutive days each month to a different author.

Kicking things off for us in the month of December, we have Reed James, prolific author of nearly 60 different erotic series.

Reed is a thirty year-old guy living in Tacoma, WA. "I love to write, I find it freeing to immerse myself in a world and tell its stories and then share them with others." He's been writing naughty stories since high school, furiously polishing his craft, and finally feels ready to share his fantasies with the world.

"I love writing about women who want to be a little (or a lot) naughty, people expressing their love for each other as physically and kinkily as possible, and women loving other women. Whether it's a virgin experiencing her/his first time or a long-term couple exploring the bounds of their relationships, it will be a hot, erotic story!"

For his day job Reed drives a paratransit shuttle, helping the disabled and senior citizens get around town. "It can be both a rewarding and stressful job in turns. And sometimes sad."

Follow him on twitter @NLPublications, like him on Facebook, and visit his blog where you can sign up for his newsletter and receive two free ebooks.

Reed began his erotica career with a series of cuckolding tales entitled the Naughty Wives Series, before moving on to his lesbian-themed Seducing Straight Women Series.

Of course, what he is best know for - and the entire reason we invited him to stop by this week - is his 40+ series of futanari themed stories, starting with Futanari Massage and Futanari Coeds.

While Futa College Exhibitionism is his latest series, it's his A Futa and Her Dragon series that he is most excited about. "I'm having a lot of fun mixing fantasy and futanari together," he told us, explaining that he loves them both.

With that in mind, I will be kicking off the Fourplay Fetish Feature festivities this afternoon with a review of Futa's Discovery, the first book of the series - which currently stands at 15 volumes, with Elf's Passionate Surprise being the latest.

Fourplay Fetish Feature: Futa's Discovery by Reed James

A Futa and Her Dragon is an ongoing series from Reed James that mixes epic fantasy with futa erotica. It makes for a clever twist or bending of the genre tropes, replacing the suave, charismatic, dangerously attractive hero with an equally dashing, and rather more well-hung, heroine. Take away the sex, and this could be a lost tale from the likes of Robert E. Howard or Fritz Leiber . . . but, let us be honest, the sex is pretty important!

Futa's Discovery introduces us to Isthia, a womanizing futa thief who is just as interested in sampling the women of the kingdom as she is in stealing their treasures. She's cocky, in more ways than one, and ridiculously talented, in more ways than one.

The erotic elements are exceptionally well done, with a delicious level of detail. James makes us experience the scene, allowing us to share in the passion. Isthia is a nasty and imaginative lover, taking what she wants, when she wants, and how she wants it - at least until the dragon arrives on scene. The fantasy aspects are more hinted at than fully explored here, but still intriguing. We learn about the geography of the world, the other races, and some of the mythology. It is clear there is more to explore, and I suspect we will see them in future volumes.

Futa's Discovery delivers well on its promise, and ends with a glorious tease of future A Futa and Her Dragon installments.

Fourplay Fetish Feature: Why I love Futanari by Reed James

$

Continuing our Fourplay Fetish Feature on his erotic futa fiction, Reed James has graciously agreed to stop by and share with us his thoughts on why he, as a heterosexual man, is so attracted to the concept and exploration of futanari. It's an interesting take on both sexuality and fetishization, which reminds us that the spectrum of gender attraction is just as broad as that of gender expression.

I am a lover of Futanari, which has always surprised me. I'm a heterosexual guy, I've never been interested in guy-on-guy action. I love women. I love everything about them: their faces, smiles, hair, breasts, hips, calves, thighs, asses, and pussies. And yet, you put a dick on a girl, and leave everything else the same, and it becomes even sexier.

There is something so erotica about a beautiful woman with a dick fucking another woman. It's like all the fun of guy-on-gal porn without the guy's hairy ass filling up the frame of the camera (the worse shot in porn, by the way, is that low angle shot where all you can really see is the guy's ass going up and down and occasionally you see some penetration). It's probably why I like girl-on-girl porn so much, not ugly guys getting in the way of looking at some beautiful women being naughty.

Now here's the weird thing. I'm not a fan of real transgender men/women. Real pics of a gal with dick don't do anything for me. Anime pics of dickgirls=hot. Reading about dickgirls=hot. Seeing a man or woman that's started the transgender process=not hot. I really don't why, until I did some research.
Ogi Ogas, Ph.D. and Sai Gaddam, Ph.D. have studied why heterosexual men are attracted to this subset of porn and have dubbed it the Erotical Illusion. The cross of very feminine figures with penises distorts sexual cues and makes something novel, and since our brains are wired to seek out novel experiences, intense, sexual arousal follows. You can read more on their article here which goes into greater detail about many subsets of erotica: slash fiction, shemale, humantauria, and talks about male Erotical Illusions versus female Erotical Illusions.

So why can I be aroused by an anime pic of a hot girl with a dick and not be aroused by an actual transgendered person with a pair and breasts and a dick? It's an illusion. I think of the dickgirl as being first and foremost a girl, and it's hard for me to think of a real person with a dick as anything but a guy, no matter how great her boob job might be. Thanks to the Erotical Illusion, it keeps me firmly believing in my heterosexual masculinity when I'm spanking it to a hot chick with a dick fucking another hot chick!

I have written more than a few futanari stories. I hope you will come to love dickgirls as much as I do!

Fourplay Fetish Feature: The Blushing Bride by Reed James

Flying the Futa Skies is three-part series from Reed James, beginning with The Blushing Bride, that details the dealings of Aphrodite Air, an all futa airline that encourages employees to please the female passengers in whatever way possible.

There is a very nice bit of futa mythology revealed in this story. As an employee fully dedicated to the Goddess Aphrodite, Vicky has been granted youthful beauty (explaining why futas are always so beautiful), rendered irresistible to women (explaining why they are always so eager to cheat with a futa), and the ability to transform her clitoris into a penis (explaining how she hides her monster in public). Most stories just explain the futa phenomenon away with vague magic or some genetic quirk, so I loved the background detail here.

When Irene and her new hubby arrive on the plane, it is clear they are in love, and even clearer that she is uncomfortable with Vicky's advances. This leads to a very hot public seduction scene that will have you squirming in your seat, and a mile-high initiation that makes good use of the bridal theme, including the all-important bridal veil.

Fun and sexy, The Blushing Bride has more to offer than you might expect from an erotic story, and I suspect the rest of the series will reveal even more.

Fourplay Fetish Feature: My First Futa Massage by Reed James

$

Futanari Massage is six-part series from Reed James that opens with My First Futa Massage - his first futanari tale!

Feeling overworked and overstressed, Melody takes her best friend's advice and decides to visit a high-end spa known as Ms. Futa 'N Ari's Massage Parlor. While it looks like a windowless strip club from the outside, the expensive cars in the parking lot convince her to give it a try. Staffed entirely by beautiful women, it makes her feel awkward and flushed, but excited at the same time.

The slow, teasing, sensual massage that Linda provides is absolutely exquisite. James puts a lot of detail into the setting the scene, right from the layout of the room to the slow disrobing. The massage itself is erotic, and filled with teasing 'accidental' touches. I loved the way Melody's tension slowly melted away beneath Linda's touch, and the surprising fulfillment of her rapidly evolving fantasy was cleverly done.

My First Futa Massage does end on a bit of a tease, which will leave you eager to read the rest of the series, but as a self-contained story it works rather well.

He's Stuck as a Schoolgirl by Mindi Flyth

That’s what friends are for.

Author Mindi Flyth is a master of the transgender genre. In her latest work, a novella titled "He's Stuck as a Schoolgirl: A Novel of Transgender Sugar and Spice," a magic spell goes awry and an ineffectual young man accidentally transforms himself into a 10 year-old schoolgirl.

Although life as a 27 year-old male wasn't exactly pleasant for Joe, as sweet little Josie he now has to put up with schoolmate bullying and other childhood embarrassments such as being talked to like he was not really a person. While retaining Joe's original personality, the "Josie" personality begins to emerge in our schoolgirl. "Hissy fits" and pre-pubescence are deftly incorporated with prurient male desires. How the author integrates these conflicts is pure art. The whole formula is so tastefully and humorously done that it really works.

Our little heroine does everything in her power to rectify her initial horrible magical mistake and change herself back to her former self. In the process, she comes to some wonderful realizations. The question we are left with is, "Can a little school girl learn to become a happier person than a 27-year-old male who takes little or no responsibility for his life?

This is a good one!

The Complicated Geography of Alice by Jules Vilmur

I won’t forget Alice.

As I was listening to author Jules Vilmur's book, “The Complicated Geography of Alice” on my Kindle and enjoying it very much, I knew in advance that I wasn't planning to review it. I didn't think I could add anything to all the glowing comments about this poignant and well-told tale concerning the life and interactions of this very special child who apparently had a conduct problem and gender dysphoria, exacerbated by polysubstance use. Which issue came first though, we will never know.

When I finally came to the end of this fine book, my mind was blown. I was completely taken by surprise with the unexpected ending. I decided that I needed to say something, both for the sake of Alice's family and for my own peace of mind. My heart goes out to author Jules Vilmur and her family. It seems that my own 17 year-old son suffered a similar fate in 1998. So, as I was out for my walk today and listening to this incredible tale, it all came flooding back and my tears began to flow. What an experience to go through as a parent. We never signed up for this. Just know that time is a great healer. Stay strong.

Castle Murkie by Adrienne Nash

Castle Murkie by Adrienne Nash is another fine novel by an outstanding author who writes primarily in the transgender genre. As the story unfolds, our protagonist Sam, after getting lost in a blizzard, finds himself on the doorstep of Castle Murkie. Arriving nearly half dead, Sam is taken in to the castle and nursed back to health by the occupants. However, there is a strange dynamic of afoot and slowly but surely, as the snows continue to swirl for the next month marooning Sam at the castle, his true self is revealed. Eventually, there is a spring thaw and Sam is able to return to civilization. However, he is now transformed emotionally. He is no longer the same person, now presenting as the lovely Samantha.

The story goes on to focus upon the burgeoning relationship between Samantha and her former girlfriend, which has taken on a whole new light. In addition, there is the question of whether Samantha can continue on in her previous occupation or will the prejudice of a fundamentalist, "boys club" type workplace be held against her? A tragic fire then places Samantha under suspicion of arson and murder. Before long, an additional element is introduced when Samantha is attacked by a mysterious assailant. As Samantha fully transitions, a criminal inquiry into the sordid mess is initiated and a forensic resolution to the story is finally achieved.

The Twin Within Revisited by Lola Carlile and Stephanie Stockton

I would have given The Twin Within Revisited by authors Lola Carlile and Stephanie Stockton five stars because it was an excellent, well-written and moving story about an individual who struggled deeply with an intersex condition, having been born with ambiguous genitalia.

However, there was one problem with this book that really drove me crazy. For whatever reason, the author or authors, who are obviously really into food and cooking, interspersed the story with recipes of all their favorite dishes. The way this worked, and I'm paraphrasing, the text would read,  "I walked into the room and found my landlady dead." Then, out of the clear blue sky there would be a recipe for say, corn fritters, reading, " open a large can of creamed corn...etc., etc." there must have been 50 such recipes interspersed with the text.

Since I always use the text-to-speech feature on my Kindle, it was impossible to simply skip over these recipes and I had to go through every single one, line by line. These diversions were totally out of context and really ruined the flow of the book for me.

Otherwise, I did enjoy the story, an agonizing tale of a person who struggled mightily before finally coming to terms with her true self. Consider writing a cookbook!

Happiest of Holidays (courtesy of my wife)

OMG, I just can't stop smiling.

For the last 5 years (since we had the momentous Sally discussion), my wife has given me an early private Xmas gift - the kind of gift that might raise some questions were I to pull it from under the tree and open it in front of the kids and our parents.

This year she surprised me with this gorgeous French Maid's outfit, complete with a stiff crinoline, lovely lace work, and a cute bow on the back. It looks absolutely gorgeous, feels like a dream, and (best of all) it's a perfect fit.

I'm not embarrassed to say I shed a few tears of happiness. After so many years of being taught nothing but shame and disgust, of being made to feel like a disappointment and a freak, I cannot put into words what it means to have such a loving and supportive wife. Seriously, just when I think I couldn't possibly love her any more, she does something like this.

Happy Holidays, everybody!

Well, here we are, fast approaching the end of another year.

It was a year that had its share of challenges and sorrows, but one that also saw moments of happiness and joy. When I was forced to take an extended sabbatical to deal with the illness (and eventual passing) of my father, the rest of the team stepped up to keep things running. When one of our more active reviewers chose to remove herself from the trans* community, some new faces stepped in to add even more diversity to the shelves.

On behalf of myself, the review team, and all of our authors, I want to extend a hearty 'thank you' to everyone who helped make the year such a success.

With the prospect of a new year dawning bright, I plan to invest a lot more time and effort in making Bending the Bookshelf a success. We are working on some new features, looking to add even more reviewers, and are planning some new activities. At the same time, I would love to make this more of a community, and encourage more discussion.

To that end, I am delighted to offer a big end-of-year giveaway to say thanks to everyone who made 2015 such a success, and to help make 2016 even bigger and better.

All you have to do is help spread the word about our little blog - every post/share/like will earn you an additional entry in the giveaway. At the end of the giveaway I will draw one luck winner who will receive a $25 gift card to the winner's choice of Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, or Chapters.ca.

For those of you who are new to Bending the Bookshelf, welcome to our little community! Our mission is one of bending gender identities, gender expressions, and gender roles. Here you will find transgender biographies, intersex adventures, crossdressing guides, transsexual romances, futanari fantasies, tales of female dominant societies, and so much more.

Prisoner on Futa Island by J.A. Dolan

If there is one thing rarer than authors who know how to portray futanari characters properly (their dual genitalia is key) it is those authors who willingly dabble in the realm of futa-on-male erotica. Seriously, take a look on Amazon and you will find over 1300 stories dealing with futa-on-female encounters, but less than 150 dealing with futa-on-male relationships. It is definitely something of a niche fetish, which is what makes a collection like Prisoner on Futa Island so exciting.

J.A. Dolan has collected all 5 of their Prisoner on Futa Island stories in this heavily-discounted collection, offering up over 100 pages of well-written futa-on-male erotica, complete with a decent story arc to pull it all together.

When a storm leaves him shipwrecked on an unknown island, Peter discovers that the price of his eventual freedom is a year of service to the first woman who finds him - an incredibly well-endowed futa Mistress who is very excited to have collared her first slave. Despite his reluctance to serve, he eventually makes the best of his situation, especially since the alternatives include being left to die in the jungle, or being collared by a far more aggressive Mistress.

Dolan does a lovely job of evolving Peter's submission, taking him from frightened and reluctant, to passionate and appreciative. He comes to understand that he is property, a slave to be used by any of inhabitant of Futa Island, and develops enough genuine affection towards Mistress Denra to want to make her proud. It is not an easy life, especially when he is made the centerpiece of a ceremonial gangbang or sent to serve Mistress Denra's angry sister, but he accounts himself very well. This is an extremely sexual tale, and I daresay readers will have a hard time finishing it before finishing themselves - if you know what I mean!

There is a legitimate story arc here, and some real character development, but it is (of course) the erotic aspects that drive it. Dolan does a superb job of taking us through Peter's evolution, watching as he learns to accommodate both the size and passion of the island's inhabitants, and spends enough time on the intellectual and emotional aspects to really justify the depths of his physical submission. More importantly, Dolan walks that fine line between sex and gender, allowing Peter to enjoy being penetrated by the massive endowments of his futa Mistresses, without losing sight of their exquisite femininity.

Prisoner on Futa Island is a fun and sexy story that does have some dark aspects, but which also puts a surprisingly empowering twist on the idea of happily-ever-after. There is enough variety in the scenarios to keep the 5 chapters from becoming repetitive, and enough plot/character development to really justify Peter's ultimate submission. It is an exaggerated fantasy, no doubt, but that just makes the final satisfaction that much more intense.

Prison Rules by Sally Jupiter

Prison Rules by Sally Jupiter is a Kafkaesque tale of a young man, ostensibly wrongly convicted of the stabbing murder of his wife. It is an extremely complex novel, as evidenced by the feelings it evokes. I believe that most of us have had the disappointing experience of getting hooked on a book, only to have it conclude with the trite “it was all just the protagonist's dream” ending.

As I read this novel, becoming completely immersed and mesmerized by the horror of it, I actually found myself wishing that it would end that way, as just some terrible dream. However, this is a book that is so far out there, yet so possible and reality-based, that reading it was, as they say, like watching a train wreck.

Prison Rules generates extreme contrasts and evokes mixed feelings certain to play on the mind of those who are gender dysphoric. I was going to say that what happened to the main character at San Quentin Prison was beyond belief, but upon reflection, it actually was not.  Rest assured this is a novel that titillates the readers' wildest fantasies.

Wow, this was like really super hard - I don't necessarily mean to sound like a gender-swapped bimbo, but I will take full credit for the delicious double entendre!

The team posted 132 reviews over the course of this year, and that's not including the 32 reviews I wrote for Frock Magazine, Transformation Magazine, and the Rainbow Awards. Needless to say, we read a lot of books during the course of the year, so coming up with a traditional 'Best of' list was not easy.

Instead, I decided to divide our reads into a few different categories (which will also streamline things going forward), and highlight the top 3 books in each. So, without further ado, I present you with Bending the Bookshelf's Best of 2015!
